Is exclusive breastfeeding important to you?
Are you confident about breastfeeding?
Do you have good breastfeeding support around you?

This service is designed to set you up for success in breastfeeding!

Postpartum Doula Lactation Coaching comes from my client's true needs for breastfeeding support. My clients demonstrate the need for in- hospital, in-home, and overnight support, immediately post birth through the first week. Including watching at least 2 feeds in a row, partner support/rest, and education of hand expression, feeding cues, breastfeeding norms, and realistic expectations.
I operate as a postpartum doula and a lactation coach combo. So you get the targeted support you need, when and where you need it!  I am certified as a Clinical and Communication Lactation Specialist. This is the same education as an IBCLC without the bureaucracy of "board certification."

I DO aim to set you up for breastfeeding success and refer you out to an IBCLC, IF major problems arise.

I DO NOT diagnose or treat any major problems ie: tongue tie.

I DO triage situations IF you have an appointment with an IBCLC and you need immediate in-home support while you wait for your appointment.

What it looks like:

In Pregnancy
- we will have a 1 hour discussion on your "why," breast health, feeding expectations, milk making, hand expression, keys for success, local resources, and set some long term goals. This will serve as your foundation for breastfeeding success! If this is your 2, 3, 4th, etc. baby we will discuss previous experiences, goals for this time around, and any additional education that you need.

Visit 1 - 4hrs - In hospital/at home within 24hrs of birth
  • spend time talking about your birth experience...this is important for breastfeeding success!
  • observe a feed
  • give you latch and positioning support
  • instruct your partner (or support people) how they can support you in my absence
  • review feeding cues and first 48hr newborn expectations
  • help you all get a rest
  • get baby and you prepared for a second feed
  • observe a second feed, with your partner (or support people) as the point person for support ("see one, do one, teach one" strategy)
  • provide instructions and expectations for the next 24hrs

Visit 2 - 8hrs - In-home, overnight, the night you come home
  • Partner goes to bed
  • Chat for a bit and get updated on things
  • Observe/support a feed
  • While you feed, I make sure your snack/water/tools/etc are all set up for easy access overnight
  • When done I'll take babe and you can get ready for bed
  • You go to sleep while babe and I rest in the other room or babe stays with you and I rest close by so I can hear them if they wake
  • When babe is ready to eat again, I will wake you and we begin again
  • My goal is to maximize your sleep. The less you have to do to feed/comfort your babe at night, the more rest you will get. You should only have to sleep, care for your body, and feed your baby. I will do the rest!
  • Sometimes we "train" your partner or support folks on "Daddy Doula" care ie: my breastfeeding support role overnight. This way they can help you for all the nights to come.

Visit 3 - 4 hrs - In-home the day of your first pediatrician visit
  • spend time talking about your breastfeeding experience thus far and the pediatrician visit. Note: this first pediatrician visit sets the tone for feeding moving forward based on baby's weight gain
  • similar visit to day 1 but in your home
  • check to make sure baby's latch, feeding positions, and your comfort are being supported during feeding
  • develop a feeding  plan for the next week
  • review realistic expectations
  • set a couple of short and long term goals

* You have text and call access to me for 6 weeks :) We can also schedule additional visits, if needed.

I offer scholarships for this service. I want every mother to have success with breastfeeding and to reach her goals! If you feel you qualify please let me know!
